      <image:title>Banu Peter and ADA - Banu Oney</image:title>
      <image:caption>Banu grew up sailing on her family’s boats from the age of one. Her father Muhittin Öney was one of Turkey’s prominent yachtsmen and she spent her childhood years living, racing, cruising with her family. Her family built, owned and sailed on sailing yachts Keyfim, Sim, Kerme, and Mistral for over 40 years. Banu loves dinghy sailing and used to be a competitive Laser sailor. Banu worked as an academic at various universities in Turkey and USA. After completing her PhD at the University of California, Santa Barbara, she taught and conducted research at Bogazici University in Turkey as well as the University of Delaware and University of Ilinois, Chicago, in the US. She quit academia after brain aneurysm surgery in 2005. Denize II is her second “big boat”. She has sailed from the Turkish coast to the Greek Islands, Red Sea, and Western Mediterranean multiple times before she set off towards that Atlantic Ocean. Banu’s articles on cruising have been published in Naviga and Yelken Dünyası magazines in Turkey. She also lectures on her journeys in boat shows and other gatherings. She is the author of Ada ile Denizden Denize, a children’s book about her travels with her beloved Portuguese Water Dog ADA. Banu met Peter in Gibraltar in 2009 and they have been cruising together happily since.</image:caption>

      <image:title>Banu Peter and ADA - ADA the Sailor Dog</image:title>
      <image:caption>ADA is a Portuguese Water Dog, born in 2008. She lived aboard Denize II since she was 3 months old. She loves to swim, chase seagulls and fetch toys. Ada crossed the Atlantic Ocean twice so far. She is now getting ready to sail to the South Pacific. Her favorite toys are stuffed white rabbits. Ada calls all stuffed toys “rabbits”. ADA is Peter’s “service dog”. You can read the story of ADA and Banu sailing around the world in “ ADA ile Denizden Denize ”, a children’s book written by Banu Öney and illustrated by Demet Kitiş.</image:caption>

      <image:title>Banu Peter and ADA - Peter Saggers</image:title>
      <image:caption>Peter started sailing as a boy on a ketch rigged commercial fishing vessel on the east coast of the South Island of New Zealand. He has been a liveaboard sailor most of his adult life. Peter is a professional boatbuilder, who likes to develop innovative solutions to construction issues and readily embraces new materials and technologies Peter has sailed the North and South Pacific Oceans, parts of the Southern Ocean, South China Sea, Indian Ocean, Tasman Sea, Mediterranean Sea and the North and South Atlantic Oceans, either doing deliveries, or as a skipper on other owners’ cruising boats, or lazily cruising on his own boats. He has a Commercially Endorsed RYA YachtMaster Offshore Certificate. Peter has made multiple modifications to Denize II to improve her performance and liveability. Check out the “projects” page to learn about Peter’s work on Denize II.</image:caption>

      <image:caption>Building the bracket. The mounting plates that bolt to the engine are complete and a temporary jig to hold the drive pulleys in place welded on. This meant all alignment of pump and alternator could be done in the workshop. The modifications to the electro mechanical clutch have been completed. Our good friend Attila is welding the base for the alternator. This automotive model did not do well and was replaced with the large frame one (shown in the top photo) in the Canary Islands.</image:caption>

      <image:title>Water Maker</image:title>
      <image:caption>Up and running, raising pressure to 60 bar increases output to 3 liters per minute but a lower pressure still gives a little over 2.5 liters and puts less strain on everything. Depending on both water temperature and salinity this can vary by over a liter per minute. This reading is in the relatively warm salty Med. In Alaska we were making 3.5-4 liters/min in some of the bays we anchored in. Pressure is adjusted with the valve on the panel. There is also a safety valve incorporated into the system that limits maximum pressure to 60 bar in the event of any failure to the adjusting mechanism.</image:caption>

      <image:title>Water Maker</image:title>
      <image:caption>The mount almost finished. The weight of the pump bears on the lower plate but it is bolted in place with the top piece. Once in place the confined nature of the engine room prohibited access under the bracket so no bolts could be placed there.</image:caption>

      <image:title>Water Maker</image:title>
      <image:caption>High pressure pump and high output large frame alternator share the same mounting plate. It is bolted to the engine and also has an extra engine mount to take the weight. This is positioned exactly in line with the center of the crankshaft which should be close to the axis on which the engine vibrates or moves against the inertia of the drive train. The purpose of this mount is to reduce the load on the engine to bracket connection not increase it!</image:caption>

      <image:caption>A rather agricultural looking bracket holds the valve that directs the product water to either the tank or overboard via a skin fitting mounted in one of the galley sinks. We sample this water with a salt gauge before switching to the tank. Micro switches illuminate the appropriate warning lights on the control panel. Without these warning lights it was too easy to start the pump and inadvertently send water to the tank prior to testing.</image:caption>

      <image:caption>Essaouira was a step back into history. Traditional dhows built right on the waters edge with hand tools, stone buildings showing the passage of time lining the narrow streets, men dressed in dishdasha, and not in some Disneyesque attempt to impress tourists, made the city enchanting. We were hoping to spend a few days here, but when we realized strong winds approaching had to beat a hasty departure. Instead of checking out this charming city we rushed out of the harbor to get to Agadir sooner than later.</image:caption>

      <image:caption>Deniz trims the bulkhead cutouts to match the vinyl covered trim sections. While Peter would have instinctively picked up his router and used a ball bearing guided cutter, good sense prevailed and a slower less dusty option was taken. A hole saw for the corners and reciprocating saw for the straight runs.</image:caption>

      <image:title>forwardcabin</image:title>
      <image:caption>The drawers under the bunk simply needed rough plywood supports to be added to the existing interior liner. As the photo shows this is a little ugly but when sanded and painted is perfectly serviceable. An extra bulkhead was also added aft of the bow thruster to make a separate compartment for very light items such as winter duvet, spare pillows etc. A new bunk front was laminated to extend the length of the bed.</image:caption>
    </image:image>
    <image:image>
      <image:loc>https://images.squarespace-cdn.com/content/v1/5de43d483fbbc6593aeac8e5/1584580268087-1THVMZG7FO3GMH97IVBO/IMG_5511.jpeg</image:loc>
      <image:title>forwardcabin</image:title>
      <image:caption>The storage nooks fitted into the bunk sides were laminated glass fibre moulded inside a plastic storage box. The wooden trim was cut from cherry and stained to match as closely as possible the rest of the boat.</image:caption>

    <image:image>
      <image:loc>https://images.squarespace-cdn.com/content/v1/5de43d483fbbc6593aeac8e5/1584580105108-KAUJE8OPR8H9R872U5YX/IMG_5385.jpeg</image:loc>
      <image:title>forwardcabin</image:title>
      <image:caption>We first had to remove the vinyl covered panels which are attached with Velcro. From the cutouts already in the fore and aft bulkheads it appears Beneteau may have initially intended to do what we actually did. Notice the original cut out, forward of the trim piece, in what could have been a water tight collision bulkhead. As shown below we increased the size of this and made one.</image:caption>
    </image:image>
    <image:image>
      <image:loc>https://images.squarespace-cdn.com/content/v1/5de43d483fbbc6593aeac8e5/1584581449129-QMR2JRVB75BIEOU0OPYK/IMG_0483.jpg</image:loc>
      <image:title>forwardcabin</image:title>
      <image:caption>The collision bulkhead was made by increasing the size and changing the shape of the existing cut out which gives access to the area under the chain locker. The cutout has to be sized so that the hatch with its large flange can be rotated and removed. The existing bulkhead had to have more glass laminated to it and onto the hull to make the whole compartment water tight and strong enough to remain so in the event of damage. The hatch is made from two laminations of glassed plywood, one the size of the cutout and the other 40mm larger all around for the silicone seal. 6mm bolts permanently installed into the hatch make removal simple. Two small drawer pulls on the front make it easy to hold while manoeuvering it to align the bolts with the holes. The upholstered trim panel covers all the ugliness here.</image:caption>
    </image:image>
    <image:image>
      <image:loc>https://images.squarespace-cdn.com/content/v1/5de43d483fbbc6593aeac8e5/1584580453810-O1VJ4YCH5H6XBMH5Q1D8/fullsizeoutput_220+2.jpeg</image:loc>
      <image:title>forwardcabin</image:title>
      <image:caption>The drawer fronts were cut from the original plywood and then were edged with solid timber rebated into them. Doing this is a lot more reliable than the Beneteau “iron on” plastic edges, which, especially in tropical heat, always fall off. Drawers run on heavy duty double length slides which enable them to be both easily removed and fully opened.</image:caption>

      <image:caption>The rough bookcase shelves are dry fitted together. The side rails, however are mortised with “fantail” wedged joints into the stiles. Once driven together these joints can’t be separated so they are glued together without the trial fit. While this technique has perhaps been made redundant with the use of modern adhesives, it never the less makes joints that will never open up, and is not much more time consuming than straight mortises.</image:caption>

      <image:caption>Standard Beneteau staysail chainplate, milled out to take, on the the forward side a low friction ring. I turned a flat surface and 2 degree taper to the outside and the same to the chainplate. The ring was made .003” larger and shrunk/heatshrunk, fitted into the stainless bar. Pack the ring in dry ice, heat the chainplate and very quickly press the two together. The ring taper protruded past the aft face of the chainplate and prided a tenon to heat shrink a bronze ring to complete the job.</image:caption>

      <image:caption>Sail has webbing loops in lieu of metal hanks. The only problem we have is that the sail maker did not make them long enough to slide over a metal shackle which would have been less trouble than the soft one we have to use.</image:caption>

      <image:title>staysail</image:title>
      <image:caption>A 4:1 tackle made of dyneema line and low friction rings keeps the high load of the stay inside the area bounded by the shroud chainplates and the forestay. Once tensioned, the spinnaker down-haul can be removed if a multi wrap of thin dyneema is used to lash the final ring to the anchor point. If this is done, with the addition of another ring on the tack anchor point, a variable length tack-line can be made, allowing easy adjustment of sheeting angle, and /or a way to fly the sail higher up the mast if it is collapsing when the boat is in the wave troughs. (I hope you never have this problem!! It sure has scared me on occasion…)</image:caption>
